Climate QuickScan: Dairy Footprints, Fast and Accurate

Jef Aernouts

Two years ago, we launched our comprehensive footprint tool for dairy cattle: Farmdesk Climate. Farmdesk Climate runs on real-time data from a wide variety of data connections. This provides, with minimal effort, an accurate picture that the farm can use to guide its operations, as well as insight into its techno-economic results.

Some parties asked for something different: a snapshot that prioritizes speed over depth. Think of markets where not all data is available or where the first steps are being taken in implementing a footprint.

Farmdesk QuickScan provides that snapshot. Each dairy farm has its own climate footprint, which the dairy farmer can complete in about 20 minutes. The tool is designed for dairy companies that need to efficiently gather comparable data from hundreds of suppliers.

How QuickScan Differs from Current Practice

To be completed by the dairy farmer in about 20 minutes

The standard approach to calculating a farm-specific carbon footprint involves a consultant visiting each farm. When applied across all suppliers, this makes calculating the footprint an administrative project in and of itself. With QuickScan, the dairy farmer enters the data themselves. Dairy farmers who use it report approximately 20 minutes per scan.

Farmer-friendly and foolproof

The questions are phrased in the farmer’s own language and are relevant to everyday practice. Built-in checks immediately flag errors: unlikely values are highlighted with the expected range, and the feed ration is verified against actual milk production before the dairy farmer can proceed.

ISO 14067-certified

A quick footprint is only valuable if it stands up to critical scrutiny. QuickScan uses a methodology that is certified according to ISO 14067, the international standard for the climate footprint of products. QuickScan can also be linked to external calculation engines for organizations that already use their own or a recognized calculation method.

A Single Methodology Across National Borders

Dairy companies that collect milk in multiple countries often use a different carbon footprint tool for each market, each with its own assumptions. This makes it impossible to compare or aggregate the figures. QuickScan applies a single methodology to each supplier company, ensuring that the results for the entire supply chain are consistent.

Progress Tracked by Company

Each QuickScan provides a snapshot of the company as it operates today. If the scan is repeated quarterly or annually, it is compared with the previous one each time: this comparison shows how the carbon footprint has changed for each emission source, and which input data account for those changes.
